Research

MAFC's research draws on the expertise available in the financial services industry and in the professions and academia, specifically in funds management, to undertake study in emerging regulatory regimes for the supervision of superannuation and pension systems. The end product of research output is the development of training programs for regulators from emerging markets in the APEC region who are currently facing the challenges of the emergence of private pension systems.

Symposia

MAFC conducts symposia to exchange information and ideas between government, the private sector and academia utilizing a wealth of knowledge and skills vested in Victoria and around the Asia-Pacific region. The purpose of these symposia is to identify gaps in knowledge amongst regional officials concerning financial regulation and sector development, and to apply governance initiatives, including investment liberalisation frameworks. The outcome is to develop modules that form the basis of capacity building training programs that respond to the regulatory demands of regional officials.

Training Programs

Under the auspices of the Australian APEC Study Centre, MAFC is a leading international finance sector executive training institution that over the years has specialised in financial services training for Asia Pacific regulators and industry representatives. Programs include:

  • Promotion of policy frameworks and supportive capacity building initiatives that enhance governance of foreign investment through training of the region's investment policy regulators and advisers
  • Managing Regulatory Change (MRC) in life insurance and pensions in support of burgeoning funds in the Asia-Pacific region that continue to grow and become major institutions that strengthen and deepen capital markets
  • Training of Chinese regulators and bankers in risk management and governance processes
  • Application of new international prudential standards as prescribed by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in the form of Basel II, involving a new risk-based approach to the supervision of banks including the refinement of capital adequacy ratios
